succeeded in orchestrating one of the most successful ABCD roll out programs in Washington State; 92 Pierce County
Dentists have seen 19000 children in the first 4 years of the program. Pierce County Dentists have been making a difference

Dear Dr. Bradway:
I am recognizing the Pierce County ABCD Dental Program for its efforts in increasing access to dental services. I realize that
good oral health is an important part of overall health, and that this is often overlooked in the health care reform discussion.
Today, people are retaining their teeth for a lifetime, which means an increase in the need for prevention of dental disease
and access to oral health care.
I am pleased at how the Pierce County ABCD Dental Program has improved children’s oral health, with 92 dentists treating
19,000 kids. As you know, preventive activities are most successful when they occur in the first six years of life. The
intervention offered to these young children through the program is critical.
In 2008, Medicaid spent more than $47 million in Washington State to treat children’s dental disease. Since dental disease is
preventable, reducing the need for treatment through prevention will decrease the cost of dental disease and provide cost
savings to our state.
I applaud Pierce County’s efforts to develop good relationships between patients and providers. The Tacoma-Pierce County
Health Department and United Way working collaboratively in support of ABCD is a win-win for the community. I am
encouraged by your goal to increase participating dentists and attract more corporate and professional donors over the next
five years.
Thank you for your leadership in this program and I encourage private and public agencies to financially support the Pierce
County ABCD Dental Program. I wish you a bright future.
