The following is a list of dental waste companies that are available to dental offices. Pierce County Dental Society does not endorse any of these companies. The list is only intended as a contact resource for offices. It is up to the Dental Office to check out the individual dental waste company and the services they provide.

AMALGAM WASTEWATER:
Although amalgam wastewater is not currently prohibited from the sanitary sewer, contact your local sewer utility for updated discharge limits. For information on treatment units call Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department (TPCHD) Hazardous Waste Hotline: 1-800-287-6429.

X-RAYS

X-ray film, film packets, lead aprons, fixer and developer that is mixed with fixer contain silver or lead and are hazardous. They cannot be put in the garbage or down the drain.

X-Ray Fixer:
Don't put fixer into the sewer drain or septic system. Instead, you can:
  • Send it to an outside facility for solvent recovery (see list below):
  • Buy or lease your own treatment unit to reclaim fixer. Be sure your treated fixer meets the limits set by your sewer utility before it goes down the drain.
  • Hire a waste management firm to pick up the fixer (See list below)

X-RAY DEVELOPER:
Spent developer can typically go into the sewer drain (but not the storm drain or septic system). Developer mixed with fixer, and unused developer, should not go into the drain, but should be handled as hazardous waste. Call 800-287-6429 for more information.

LEAD FOILS:
Return lead foils to a facility that reclaims and reuses the lead. Kodak provides a service for this. You can also recycle lead foils through metal reclaimers. Kodak Dental Program (mail-away) 800-933-8031
